My cat has a URI and is on amoxicillin. Why is her mouth open while sleeping?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 11 months and 21 days old | 7.3 lbs

My cat Cece has a URI. She went to vet hours after exhibiting symptoms and got amoxicillin. It's been about three days since diagnosis. She is a bit more active now. She's sleeping on my lap and I noticed she has her mouth open and is swallowing a bit. Haven't noticed her mouth open when she's awake. Is this a typical URI symptom? Could it be the position she's sleeping in? She doesn't have her head elevated

Amoxicilin can cause GI upset, and that could make Cece nauseous. When cats are nauseous, they can drool excessively, and that may be why she has her mouth open and is swallowing a bit. As long as she isn't having trouble breathing, she hopefully will be ok. I'm glad she has been improving! I hope this helps.
