Why is my puppy still limping after a week with no pain or whining?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year old | 30 lbs

My puppy was playing with the other dogs when he suddenly yelped and jumped away from them. He started limping on his left hind leg, felt all over he didn't whine or even try to move away from me. So I thought he might have just strained it so I made him rest for a week. But he still limps occasionally or if he is standing still sometimes he will lift his leg and just hold it up. He runs unhindered, never cries when I touch any part of his leg or hip, so what could be wrong with his leg?

Poor Charlie! It could be he strained or torn a ligament in his leg. A strained ligament can take a while to heal. But given the fact he's been limping for a week, it's time to take him into the vet. He may benefit from pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Do not give him any human pain medications, many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. I would take him into vet today or tomorrow. I hope this helps!
