How to help my dog sleep with an e-collar and ease nighttime anxiety?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Male | unneutered | 6 years and 6 months old | 7 lbs

Update Question # 3: Timmy just recently got a sheath cleaning at the vet this morning and was given antibiotics. Looks like he’s going to be okay :) however, he was given an E-Collar and he is not having it! He looks miserable and I feel so bad for him but I know he needs to keep it on! Nighttime is the worst becuase he cannot sleep. I don’t think he knows that he can lay down in it. He just falls asleep standing up. Any tips in helping him overcome this e-collar nighttime anxiety?

Hopefully he will do better tonight as he gets used to the cone. You could try a different type of e-collar - some dogs will do better with a clear plastic or an inflatable version. I’ve had some patients that have needed a sedative to keep the collar on as well. Since he’s a little dog a post surgery bodysuit might be an option. I’d recommend seeing if your vet carries any other types of e collars to try first.
