Why did my guinea pig get a respiratory infection in a clean cage?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Guinea Pig | Female | unspayed | 4 years and 2 months old | 2 lbs

I'm wondering what causes a guinea pig to develop a lower respiratory disease like ammonia? How would they come into contact with the bacteria that causes the illness? I'm just not understanding how or why a guinea pig would develop such an illness when they haven't come into contact with anyone with it and their environment is well kept.

Thanks for reaching out about Belle. The hard part with this is that different bacteria can be contracted through different routes. Bordatella is a common respiratory pathogen of dogs and rabbits, and can be transmitted to guinea pigs. Other bacterias are common in the environment and become opportunistic. Still other might harbor deep in the lungs, awaiting the opportunity to cause problems. Good luck.
