My young guinea pig has dark brownish urine stains. Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Guinea Pig | Male | unneutered

My guinea pig is very young, about three-four months. He eats normal, plays around, and drinks fine. However the urine stains on his bedding are dark in color! Should i be worried? I read their urine oxidizes a dark color but this is brownish!

Thanks for reaching out about Beto. Dark urine can be the result of carotenoids in the urine (from yellow/orange veggies) or other pigments. Although blood is possible, not common in young guinea pigs, but possible. Removing these vegetables from the diet for a short period of time, might change the appearance of urine. Good luck.
