My old dwarf hamster is breathing with crackling noises. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Unknown - Small Animal | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 5 months old

Amber is making wired crackling noises when breathing and she can’t stop. One eye is shut and the other is black with a white dot in the middle of it. She has been blind and deaf for quite a few months now, but I’m getting really worried about her breathing. I know that she is quite old for a dwarf and she has never experienced any symptoms of diabetes. I have also always closely watched her diet. I will bring her to vet in morning I’m expecting bad news. What do you think? Thanks for ur time xx

Unfortunately it sounds like she is in significant respiratory distress. Crackles usually indicate fluid on the lungs. I would make her as warm and comfortable as possible and get her to a vet asap. I would prepare yourself that it won't be good news. Sorry to hear about Amber.
