How to stop my dog from getting in the trash when I'm not home?

My dog will not stop getting in the trash. She only does it when I am not home so I’m not sure how to punish her if I’m not catching her in the act. What do you suggest? Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua (Smooth Coat) | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 6 months old | 9 lbs

You are correct, you can’t punish her without catching her in the act. The easiest thing is to either put the trash can in an area she can’t reach it or put her in a crate. You could also try a different kind of trash can. It’s hard to train a dog not to do something when you can’t catch them in the act.
