My dog currently takes Trifexis. She really dislikes it because of the smell. Would there be any other non-topical medication options? Thanks so much!

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Yes, there are lots of other non-topical flea and tick prevention options. Nexgard and Bravecto have oral chews that dogs can eat as treats. Nexgard is monthly whereas Bravecto is every 3 months. Both of these prevent against fleas and ticks. Heartgard is an oral medication that protects against heartworm and other intestinal parasites. There is a Seresto collar that can be worm by dogs to prevent flea and tick infections for up to 8 months. I recommend reaching out to your local vet to see which products they have available. I hope this is helpful!

Hi there and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There are a wide variety of options to choose from. It all depends on whether or not you would like an all in one product and/or whether Buttercup prefers chewable preventatives or topical preventatives. There is a product called Revolution which helps prevent fleas, American Dog Tick, and heartworms. It is a once monthly preventative that you apply topically to the base of the neck. If you are looking for a product that covers more than just one type of tick, then I would recommend NexGard or Simparica which helps kill 4 different types of ticks as well as fleas. These are both once monthly chewables. Unfortunately, these two products do not prevent heartworms. However, Tri-Heart or HeartGard are once monthly chewables that prevent heartworms that I would recommend. If Buttercup has not had a recent Heartworm Test, she may need one from your veterinarian in order to purchase Heartworm prevention. I hope this helps with you decision and I wish you and Buttercup the best!

Oh no! Fleas are not a fun surprise! Trifexis prevents fleas, heartworms and some intestinal parasites. Since this isn't working for you, I typically recommend using either Nexgard, Bravecto or K9 Advantix II as flea and tick prevention. Please note that Nexgard and Bravecto are prescription-based (like the Trifexis), so these would need to be obtained by Prince's vet. Prince and his friend will also need to start a separate heartworm prevention, such as Heartgard or Interceptor, but again, these are prescription-based. Until you can pick up these new medications, you can bathe both dogs in original blue Dawn dish soap because this will help to kill the existing adult fleas. I hope this helps and that all goes well!

Nexgard is an excellent choice for fleas and ticks, and is one of the products I recommend most frequently. I generally prefer Sentinel for heartworm prevention rather than Heartgard, as it covers a wider range of intestinal parasites and also seems to be more effective at preventing heartworm infection, especially in areas with lots of heartworm disease such as the southern/southeastern US.
