My cat's eye is shut, red, goopy, and has a milky film. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 2 years old | 9.5 lbs

I found him with an irritated eye. He had some reddish goop/tears coming out of his left eye with I attached in a picture. He *can* open his eye, but he's preferring to keep it shut right now. When he does open it, it's not all the way, and you can see a very light milky film over his eye. He is an outdoor cat so I don't know if he got into a fight with another cat or what happened. I tried flushing the eye out with Optixcare eye cleaner for cats. Any advice or idea what this might be?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about He Tian. I would suspect that he may have gotten into a fight with another animal outdoors, or he could have injured his eye. He can't keep his eye open because the eye is painful to light. He has to see a vet immediately. Any eye problem is considered an emergency because leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website. Best of luck, I hope this helps!
