My dog ate sushi scraps from the trash. Is soy sauce or wasabi safe?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 2 years and 3 months old | 19 lbs

We left a bag of garbage from ordering sushi out and saw Snickers (20 lbs dog) with her head in it. There doesn't seem to be anything missing so she may have just licked the traces of soya sauce or wasabi. She is going out eating grass so may have an upset tummy but that is not that uncommon for her. Do we need to be concerned or do anything?

Fortunately, licking a bit of soy sauce or wasabi should not cause any significant problems for Snickers. Ingesting a large amount of soy sauce could cause sodium toxicosis, but a few licks should not pose a concern. Wasabi can cause some mild gastrointestinal upset. It may be worth offering Snickers a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice for the next few days to err on the side of caution. The only other possible concern would be the risk of food poisoning if the sushi scraps were in the trash for more than a few hours. If Snickers begins vomiting or having diarrhea, I recommend taking her to your vet to be sure that she's not dehydrated. I hope this helps and that all goes well for Snickers!
