Cat breathing oddly, vocalizing, and not moving. Is it pain or URI?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 4 years and 2 months old | 12.5 lbs

Rocky started having breathing issues all through last night and into today - he's breathing through his nose, but it sounds like an odd combination of a snore, a whine, and a hum. He's also becoming more vocal toward me, and will only stretch his upper body outward to get something - not move or sit up. Is he in pain, or is this the onset of an illness like a URI?

Hello, sorry to hear about Rocky. It could indeed by a sign that he is having an URI. However, pain may also cause cats not to move and vocalize. If these signs persist, if you not any vomiting, lethargy, decreased appetite, or more vocalizing then he should be evaluated by a veterinarian. Hope this helps and best of luck.
