My dog's limping, has a red, swollen toe. When should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Great Dane | Male | unneutered | 8 months and 15 days old | 90 lbs

My dog began limping on sunday night 3/17. I could not discern what happened. We do have another dog and they wrestle a lot. As of 3/18, he would put weight on the foot only when he was walking, but when standing he would not put weight at all on it, when possible. I localized the area to his foot because nowhere else on his leg would he react when touched, until I touched his foot. He would nibble my hands. As of this morning 3/20, the toe is now red, almost like its bruised. It looks swollen

Poor Groot! It sounds like he may have injured himself. His toe does look quite red and swollen, and it may be infected. Because he's been limping since Sunday and you are now seeing redness and swelling, it's time to see the vet for it. I would take him into a vet right away. Best of luck.
