What does a dog fecal test check for? Does my dog really need it?

What does a fecal examination check for? Do I need to have this done for my dog? Thanks :)

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. A fecal exam usually checks for parasite eggs, single celled parasites, the presence or absence of yeast, and the mixture and types of bacterial. If your dog has any vomiting, weight loss, diarrhea or soft stool at all, then yes, I would definitely do this screening. If he has no signs whatsoever, I would still consider doing it every other year or so to catch things early. Best wishes to you and Oscar!

    A fecal test is encouraged to be done yearly. A fecal test screens for parasites that Chloe could get from exposure to other dog's fecal matter or infected soil or water. If Chloe is on a heart worm preventative product monthly that also contains a dewormer (many of these products do), then Chloe would be at a lower risk for certain parasitic worms, but would still be at risk for other parasites like protozoa which can cause illness in dogs.
