My bulldog puppy has cherry eye, green discharge. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Bully | Female | unspayed | 3 months and 9 days old | 12 lbs

My 3 month old bulldog has cherry eye. It started off small, and I first noticed it on Saturday. It is now Wednesday and the prolapsed region is now covering her entire eye. Her eye is producing green mucus. I believe it is infected. Should I take her to the vet? Is there over OTC stuff to treat the infection? She tends to rub her her on her blanket, which is probably how the infection started. Now her other eye is starting to droop and her eyeball is rolling back (eye without prolapsed lid).

Poor Ivy! She needs to go to the veterinarian for appropriate treatment. You will not find any over the counter medications that can help with a cherry eye. Ultimately Ivy may need surgery to replace the gland. It is a hereditary condition that is common in bulldogs and many other short muzzled breeds. You also need to make sure to protect the area from rubbing as this will make it worse. Have Ivy wear an elizabethan collar at all times. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.
