Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund miniature | Male | neutered | 1 year and 5 months old | 8 lbs

My dog got too excited and I think he expressed his anal glands. He smells really bad. How do I get rid of the odor? Do you recommend any products? Also, how do I prevent this from happening again?

This is not unusual when dogs get very excited. You can wash his bottom with soap and rinse well. Make sure to get the underside of his tail. There is a product called Glandex that many dogs respond well to. I it helps to express the glands when he has a bowel movement. It is a supplement that you feed them and you can find pretty easily. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.

No I am afraid, the best strategy is to leave the anal glands alone unless they are impacted. You should feed some canned pumpkin with every meal which will make the stool more voluminous and so the anal sacs will get emptied every time she has a bowel movement. The more often anal sacs are manually expressed without an impaction, the more problems she will get over time. There is a colony of bacteria living in the anal sacs which cause part of the smell. If it gets too bad, then your vet can try to flush the anal sacs with an antibiotic which will kill those bacteria. However, after a while there will be a new colony and they may or may not smell.
