Why can't my lovebird fly after recovering from illness? Is it age?

My lovebirds has been treated with vitamins and antibiotics for his sickness by the veterinarian. He's recovered from the illness but he's still unable to fly and our vet told us not to let him fly anymore which I feel bad about because he really loves to fly. I've been also told that it's because of his age (12 years). What should I do? What could be the reason why he can't fly anymore? I can't stop crying. Pet's info: Exotic | Unknown - Exotic | Male | unneutered | 12 years and 8 months old
