My cat has diarrhea and is crying after UTI treatment. Stop Meloxicam?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 13 lbs

Dexter (cat, 5 yrs, male). Took Dexter to the vets on Friday as he showed signs of UTI (he's had it before), he was given antibiotics and anti-inflammatory shots. He stayed overnight and had catheter. He came home with us Saturday afternoon as he was stressed in the vets. We've been given Meloxicam for him as well as Hypovase and Noroclav. He has had bad diarrhoea for two days now and is crying. Melxicam says to stop if he gets diarrhoea, should I? Worried he is in pain is all.

Hello, and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. No, I would not recommend giving Meloxicam if Dexter is having diarrhea. You should touch base with your vet again and give them the update on Dexter. They may decide to prescribe something additional to address the diarrhea, and can discuss the pros and cons of Meloxican to determine if there's a more appropriate medication for pain while his GI tract is upset. If Dexter is spending time straining in his litterbox and crying, this definitely requires an immediate recheck with your vet to make sure Dexter isn't developing a urinary obstruction - a common condition in male cats who are prone to other urinary issues. Hope this helps and he feels better soon!
