My gerbil's tail looks shaved and is bloody. Will it heal naturally?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Gerbils tail, not sure if he's okay. He's moving around, eating and drinking. The last 2 inches tops on his tail looks shaved. Not sure if it's the other gerbil so I separated them. Vet said to look at my cage, maybe it got caught? And it makes sense because it's perfectly shaved. It's not pouring blood but it's bloody.. do you think he's ok? Do their tails naturally heal?

Hello, and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Like any species, gerbils can heal just fine from minor scrapes and cuts as long as the wound doesn't become infected - including their tails. Keep an eye on the wound and make sure it is looking progressively better in the coming days. If you feel it's looking worse (red, swollen, more bloody, or a thick pus-like discharge) then you should contact your vet again. Hope this helps!
