My cat has gingivitis. When will meds help and what should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 3 years and 7 months old | 15 lbs

My cat has been diagnosed as having gingivitis and has been prescribed antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medicine. How long would it take for my cat to start feeling better and eat properly again and what should I do in the meantime? Any advice would be helpful.

The medications should have an effect within a week or so but response is variable. Gingivitis can be complicated in cats as it can have an autoimmune component. Special foods can help with the condition and daily tooth brushing with pet toothpaste will help the most if Chibi will allow it. Some cats may eventually need all the teeth removed. Hopefully Chibi’s is not that serious and I hope she responds quickly to treatment. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.
