How long does dog inner ear infection treatment take to work?

I have a 10-12 year old Chocolate Lab....not quite sure of the age, he is a rescue....Friday after work I went home, took him out and everything was fine.....returned a few hours later and he was holding his head at a tilt and having trouble with balance....I called a vet and then took him to the office the next morning....his diagnosis was a severe inner ear infection...today is day 4 of treating this...though the symptoms are a little better, how long should this last??? Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 75 lbs
