My dog keeps licking a bite wound. Should I use cream or cover it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | neutered | 12 lbs

My dachshund was either bit or scratched by my other dog that outweighs him by about 50lbs. The wound did not bleed nor did it seem to faze him when it happened. He has been licking it CONSTANTLY. I put peroxide on it about 30 minutes after it happened. It does not appear to be deep but I am afraid it will get infected. Should I put an antibacterial cream on it & cover it or leave it alone?

I would actually recommend taking Shadow Box into a vet now. The cut looks long enough to need stitches, and the vet can prescribe him pain medication as well as antibiotics to prevent any infection.
