Will leaving my cat for 3 months stress him? Will he forget me?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Bombay | Male | neutered | 15 lbs

We are considering a three months long vacation. Our cat, 10, would stay with a friend or family member during this time. Above all the travel plans, I am most worried about Caboodle's well-being. Do you think leaving him for this long will be too stressful for him? Will he forget me? He is like a son to me. He'll be 11 by the time of the trip but I have had him for 5 years. Thank you.

A three month vacation sounds lovely! Caboodle won't forget you. When I moved to New Zealand years ago, I couldn't take my cats and dogs with me right away, and they had to come a few months later. They stayed with family, and they did not forget me. I'd bring Caboodle over to your friend's house for visits before you go so he gets used to the new environment. I hope this helps!
