Why does my Lab get wobbly, shake, and go blind when suddenly woken?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | unspayed | 4 years and 5 months old

When woken suddenly my 4 year old Labrador occasionally seems to lose coordination of his legs. He needs to lay down and shakes with worry and we think that he is temporarily blind. It lasts for 5 minutes. He had a seizure 2 years ago. The vets checked him and he was fine. It's only when he suddenly wakes up, if he hears a noise for example. Your thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you

That is very odd behavior for Baxter. If your normal veterinarian cannot figure it out, record the episode and see a veterinary neurologist. It is possible that there is something abnormal in the connections within her brain. If she has not had bloodwork run recently to check her blood sugar levels, it could be related to that as well and I advise to get those checked. During that time, they will also evaluate the liver to make sure that it is normal. There is a new diet made by Purina called Neurocare and that may be something that could be beneficial to Baxter. I recommend to discuss this option with your veterinarian. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.
