Is it cruel to keep a dog always on a leash? Does it need to play?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My mom has a 1yr old labradoodle that she keeps tied to the coffee table & doesn’t let him play outside without a leash. He’s never allowed to wander the home & she believes it is perfectly fine-I think it’s abusive to live on a 6ft leash. What do you think? Shouldn’t a puppy be exercised & stimulated? What can I tell her?

This isn't good for the dog. He cannot live on a leash, it is cruel. This is no life for a dog, and he does need to be exercised and stimulated. You can tell her that you've spoken to a vet who strongly discourages this.
