Why does my bird bite my hand? Is it trust, stress, or exploring?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Female

Cheeya and Kukoo are doing better (after the mouse trap incident). Cheeya isn't able to fly right now, she climbs up from my foot to my shoulder and I can keep her on my shoulder. I feel like she does trust me now unless she doesn't understand what she's actually doing. Sometimes she'll be on my hand or finger and begin biting, I cant seem to understand if she does trust me or not, why the biting? Its a bit of a silly question sorry but just wondering.

Birds can sometimes bite or nibble if they're exploring something, and may also bite if they are feeling stressed out or unsafe in the situation. If Cheeya is just nibbling or exploring, she may just be checking out her environment. Adding in some new toys, offering her a treat or moving her to something safe she can chew on may help with this behavior. If she's biting aggressively, it may be she isn't feeling safe in the situation or is overstimulated. Giving her some time to calm down and relax in her cage or another quiet area, and then trying to interact again can help her settle down. If she does get rowdy, the time out can also let her know that the fun stops when she gets too naughty.
