My new rescue dog is coughing and hacking. Is it kennel cough?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 1 year old | 20 lbs

We brought home a rescue dog Friday. She looks like a miniature Pinscher, 20 lbs. She has had one big coughing fit each night. She occasionally sounds like she's trying to throw something up. She threw her food up once. And she sometimes makes little hacking sounds. The cough is dry. Overall she has normal energy and doesn't seem too affected. Does this sound like kennel cough or something else?

Congratulations you bringing Alice into your family! That could be kennel cough but bronchitis or reverse sneezing could also fit this description. Monitor her very closely for signs of lethargy or not eating. If it does not go away after a week or so, if the cough worsens or she continues throwing up, have her examined by her veterinarian. Heart disease or primary lung disease are also possible but uncommon in a young dog. At home use a humidifier and air purifier if the furnace is running. Also avoid activity that will make her pant as this can lead to further irritation and coughing. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.
