My dog is lethargic, restless, and licking chops. Is he in pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 6 years and 7 months old | 15 lbs

My dog is a dachshund/chihuahua mix. He's been acting lethargic and shifting around as if he can't get comfortable. Sometimes keeps licking his chops excessively and then stops. He has been eating and drinking normally and following us around for the most part but he's definitely not being himself.

Poor Rory! It sounds like he is uncomfortable. Discomfort or pain can come from many areas and common conditions are disc disease and pancreatitis. I recommend to have Rory seen by his veterinarian for a physical exam. Sometimes the doctor will need diagnostics to determine the cause and Rory will be able to get pain medication so that he feel better. Go ahead and restrict his activity in case it's his back. No running/jumping/walks/stairs. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.
