Cat urinary blockage: How much should he pee? When to go to ER?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Male | neutered | 10 lbs

My cat was recently treated for a urinary blockage, but pulled his catheter out. My vet said to keep an eye on him and take him to the emergeny room if he wasn’t peeing. How much pee should he be producing each time he uses the restroom at this point? Should I be worried that he’s still staining for little gain or is that normal for a recovering cat? At what point exactly do I take him to the emergency room?

Poor Atticus! Urinary blockage effects a cat's entire system and can make them feel very poorly. When the catheter is removed there is usually a fair bit of inflammation due to the catheter having been in place. If he is producing urine, that is a good sign. You want to see him continue and start to produce more and more. If he appears to get duller or stop urinating take him back to the vet. I hope this helps!
