Rabbit needs frequent dental trims. Is anesthesia or extraction best?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rabbit | Male | neutered | 5 years and 10 months old

a 6-year-old rabbit which weights 1600 g. It has a problem with its teeth. Six months ago we did a radiography and the doctor said that it has acids at his back teeth at its bottom jaw. The rest of the teeth are fine. The doctor rubbed them with olistic anesthesia. Byt we need to trim them every two months.....we already trimmed them 3times !!!We went to a second doctor Who said that we have to do extraction to these teeth, since it is not possible to put the rabbit under anesthesia so often.

Thanks for reaching out about Rikky. Repeated anesthesia, especially if brief, is safe depending on the veterinarian's experience, anesthesia used and health condition of the patient. Dental extractions of cheek teeth are possible, but difficult. Good luck.
