My puppy has dry, itchy skin and nothing works. What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

How to treat dry skin in puppies? No matter what I do, it doesn't seem to help. I have a 4 months old chihuahua (short coat). He is being bathed once per month with special puppy shampoo. He is brushed daily to make sure the natural skin oils reach everywhere. He is drinking a lot of water and I add some to his food too. Nothing seems to help and he is itching, especially his head (around both ears).

Try switching the diet to a food like Royal Canin or Nutro. Both of these foods contain additional supplements for coat health and many pets respond nicely to the diet after about a month. You can also supplement with an omega-3 fatty acid for dogs. Continue your current treatment as it will help as well. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.

You can try a few things for Benji. You did not mention what you are feeding but there are a couple diets that are geared toward dogs with food allergy. Royal Canin and Nutro both carry several different lines of food and they have additional fatty acids added to all the diets. You can also try supplementing with daily fatty acids (make sure to get a brand labeled for pets and not people). Lastly, use an oatmeal based shampoo and conditioner for dogs. These generally have more moisturizing properties. Please post again if you have any further questions!
