My new shelter cat is shy and hisses. Will Feliway help him adjust?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Male | neutered | 8 months and 15 days old | 8 lbs

I just adopted a new 9 month old kitty from a shelter. He was taken out of a kill shelter and was in a rescue for 7 months. They said he is shy and will hiss but will never bite and hasn't bitten sense i brought him home. I have him confined to my room right now with food, water and a litter box. Any time i go to pet him he hisses but still will let me pet him (kind of) On the way home he also had a accident in car . Does feliway really work? What can i do to get him to love me? I wanna help him

Congratulations on your new kitten! Sometimes it takes a while to gain their trust. Try to get him to play as this will help him to bond with you. Make sure to put the toys away after the play session so that they remain fresh in his mind and always associated with you. Sit quietly near him at mealtime and gradually work up to petting him or hand feeding him. Feliway does help and I recommend to use this product but it will not alter his behavior on its own. Make sure to provide an area for climbing such as a tall cat tree or shelves as this will help to satisfy his natural instinct and decrease stress. Best of luck and please feel free to post any additional questions.
