My cat's subq fluids leak after injection. What am I doing wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Russian Blue | Female | spayed | 6 years and 6 months old

My kitty is in stage 3 renal failure, and I have been giving subq fluids, at first every day, now she is eating and drinking well, even gaining weight, so Ive reduced them to 3x a week, this has been going on for over 2 months, and now after removing the needle ( 18g) the fluid leaks back out for an hour until the "hump" is gone. What gives? What am I doing incorrectly?

It could be you aren't putting the fluids in deep enough under the skin. I'd take Miss Grey into the vet to show them your technique, and they can let you know what you are doing wrong and how to fix it. Best of luck.
