Do puppies need pre-neuter bloodwork if mom has liver/kidney issues?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 7 months and 23 days old | 6 lbs

Hello, could you assist with my "probably" dumb question,,, our puppies, 7-8 months old, we are planning to have them neutered,,, should we be concern ? reason, their mom, has possible liver and kidney problem, which we found out from blood panel collection and check, that there might be a problem. .. so in lieu of their mom problem, is liver & kidney a hereditary problem ? we are planning to have the puppies neutered, and to save money, we are planning to avoid the blood panel check,

It is possible there could a genetic component. For the best possible outcome, I recommend to spend the money and have the blood panel run on each puppy. Pre-existing liver or kidney problems can be exacerbated by medications used during surgery, low blood pressure or low heart rates. If the condition is severe enough, some pets are not candidates for the procedure. Genetics however are complex and just because mom has a condition, this does not mean that her babies do but you should play it safe. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.
