Why is my cat not eating dry food and making hairball sounds?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Female | spayed | 6 years and 3 months old | 18 lbs

Ari has been uninterested in her dry food for about 3 days. She will eat wet food and hard treats though. Every so often I’ve heard her making a hairball noise and almost a squeaky breathing sound. It doesn’t last very long. I assumed she would pass a hairball, but I haven’t found one yet. She went to the vet on 2/20/19 for a dental cleaning and the vet informed us to keep an eye on her ear as it could be working on an infection. Thoughts?

I can see why you are worried. It's good that Ari is eating wet food at least, and I would be more concerned if she isn't eating at all. She could be feeling off and may have a GI illness. Since this has been going on for three days, I think it's time to see a vet. I would bring her into her vet in the morning. Best of luck.
