My dog got laundry detergent on his tail. Should I call the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 9 years and 8 months old | 28 lbs

I came home to find laundry detergent spilled on the floor where my dog was. It is all over his tail and I am afraid he licked it and will get sick or worse. He has not thrown up or had diarrhea as far as I've seen. I am unaware of when this happened. He often chews his tail where the detergent is. Should I take him to the vet?

Oh no, poor Bo! Wash his tail thoroughly, and keep watch on him for signs he ingested it. If you see vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, swollen abdomen, burns in the mouth, excessive drooling, disorientation, weakness, seizures, or collapse, take him into a vet immediately.
