Why is my dog's eye area puffy, dry, scaly, and losing hair?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 13 years and 10 months old | 100 lbs

A few days ago we notice the skin near out dog's eye seemed dry, a bit scaly, and was missing hair. Today it seems to be a bit puffier as if there may be fluid inside of it. It doesn’t appear to bother him and he doesn’t seem to want to itch or scratch it. We live in the country and so he is an outdoor dog who is constantly digging in the dirt usually in search of gophers which he often catches (not sure if there could be any issues there). Any advice you can provide would be helpful. Thank

That swelling on Dakota could be a few things such as an infection, a foreign body stuck under the skin or some sort of skin tumor. That is good that he doesn’t seem to scratch at it as that can make things worse. The most active way to take care of this would be to visit his veterinarian who may aspirate the lesion to find out what it is.
