Cat neutered: Sunken abdomen, eye trouble, not eating. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 8 lbs

I got my cat neutered Wednesday morning and now his back abdomen looks sunken in. I have no idea if this is normal or not and am feeling very anxious. He also seems to have trouble opening his left eye. He is able to walk pretty well now without stumbling and he has walked to his food bowl a few times but still hasn’t eaten. I’m a new cat mom and don’t know much so I just want to ensure that he is okay.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Tom. I recommend contacting his veterinarian today with your concerns. Most cats are back to normal within 12-24 hours after surgery. If he is not eating, he could be painful. Do not give any over-the-counter pain medications though as these can be toxic to cats. The sunken abdomen is not an expected side effect. It may not be a problem, but is worth discussing with his veterinarian. I hope this information helps!
