Why is my male parakeet's cere turning brown and looking crusty?

Pet's info: Bird | Parakeet | Male | neutered

My parakeets cere is a brown almost black color. It looks dry and crusty and somewhat flat. I keep finding aswers for females but he is a male and im very concerned. He lives with my mother at the moment but she isn't taking realevantly good care of him.

Thanks for reaching out about Skye. Could be beak and feather mites, that will cause a thickening of the skin. How old is Skye? It is not uncommon for older male parakeets to have testicular tumors that produce estrogen, thereby cere changes color as if a female. A veterinary visit is recommended to help with diagnostics and to discuss possible outcomes. Good luck.

    Most likely this is a hormonal related change that is sometimes seen in female parakeets. As long as she is otherwise acting normally and the dry area doesn't start to grow/increase in size I would not be concerned.
