My dog is puking, drooling, and lethargic. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Great Dane | Male | unneutered | 8 months and 20 days old | 110 lbs

My dog is puking and drooling excessively. He did eat his food and drank water after he puked and went to the bathroom normally. He’s also lethargic and less active than normal

Poor Gatsby! He could have a GI illness, may have eaten something rotten, could have a foreign body, or may have pancreatitis. I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. Best of luck.

Poor Bobby! No, this isn't normal, and he could be suffering from a severe GI illness, may have eaten something rotten or toxic, could have a foreign body, or could have pancreatitis. This excessive saliva and drooling can be caused by nausea, which he would be feeling from vomiting so much. If he has stopped vomiting, I can give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away.
