Pet's info: Dog | American Staffordshire Terrier | Male | neutered | 2 years old | 74 lbs
When my dog plays he hacks a lot during playtime and a little afterwards, he won't go get a drink either. The hacking seems excessive but only happens during playtime. My other dog does not do this. What could cause the hack? Could it be serious? It happens even when there isn't any toys. This happens during all weathers so I wouldn't assume allergies but its been an on going issue. I've mentioned to my vet but she didn't seem concerned but it freaks me out and I want him to be healthy.

There could be many different reasons for a cough. I would video tape the cough since certain coughs can indicate certain things. Is it from a collapsing trachea or maybe a reverse sneeze. I would recommend chest xrays first to rule out lung pathology also. I would recommend asking your veterinarian if he has a heart murmur. To rule out a heart condition he would need to see a cardiologist. If he has a murmur I would strongly recommend a Cardiologist. If no heart murmur he can still have heart disease and a cardiologist would be indicated just to state it is not heart-related. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
