Can I sue my vet for negligence after my cat died from heart issue?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 7 years and 2 months old | 10 lbs

My companion cat died of heart failure after undergoing a procedure. They admitted they “missed” any heart problem he had. Do I have any rights to file suit against them? I walked in with a shiny, beautiful kitty and $6,000.00 later...my baby was given back to me in a box of ashes.

I’m so sorry this happened. This is a better question for a lawyer or the veterinary board in your state. I will say that it is very common for cats to have subclinical heart disease that is not obvious on routine pre-anesthetic testing or a physical exam. I’m wondering if you’ve tried discussing your concerns with your vet as well.
