Why does my cat poop outside the litter box and how can I stop it?

My cat will not poop in the litter box. He will poop right outside of it. I have tried different litters and changing his diet. He has done this since I've had him. Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 1 year and 11 months old | 20 lbs
