Why is my dog chewing her tail, losing hair, and it smells bad?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 3 years and 8 months old | 65 lbs

4 yo spayed female, lab mix, 64 lbs. She's chewed off the hair under her tail, which is a little spotty and without hair, but no black or flaky spots. The spot atop the base of her tail is still fully covered with hair, but when you lay it back, it's pale, wet, and has a distinct odor. It's about the size of a half dollar and I catch her chewing at it, and have begun treatment with hydrocortisone spray. The site won't let me attach pictures to the question while signed in.

It sounds like Vexa has either a hot spot or fleas. You must make sure to protect the area from chewing as this will only make it worse. Have her wear an Elizabethan collar at all times. You should wash the area daily and rinse it well. You can also apply a dab coconut oil to the lesion twice daily. If this does not start to improve within a few days, have her seen. You should also treat her for fleas using a good product such as Simparica. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.
