My dog has pneumonia, heavy breathing, and gargling cough. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua (Long Coat) | Female | unspayed | 3.41 lbs

How are dogs with pneumonia able to expel the mucus that has formed in their lungs? My dog has heavy breathing and sometimes coughs with 5he sound of gargling. She has been on antibiotics for 2 days, but she's having difficulty breathing.

Sometimes they are able to cough up the mucus and other times it is slowly absorbed by the body. Since she’s having trouble breathing I recommend to call and update your veterinarian. They may recommend to see Cassie again. Best of luck and I hope this helps. Please feel free to post any additional questions.
