Samoyed ate fur, has fever, and won't eat. Is vet visit needed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Samoyed | Male | unneutered | 60 lbs

A month ago he ingested lots of my female samoyed's hair during mating season. We usually put them in different rooms but accident happened. They didn't mate but he swallowed lots of fur and days later he vomited quite a sizable hairball. Since then his appetite became less than usual and his poop was not well formed. He started vomiting but ever since he passed lots of fur on his poop, he has never vomited again. However, his fever has not gone down (39,5 degrees celsius to 40,3 degrees celsius

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If Monaco still has a temperature that has increased to over 40 degrees Celsius, he may have an infection or inflammation elsewhere that is unrelated to him ingesting some of your female Samoyed's hair. Especially if his appetite is decreased, and he has had some abnormal GI signs, I recommend having him seen by your veterinarian. He/she can perform a physical exam and may recommend bloodwork to look for any underlying cause of his fever. Otherwise, if he is acting normally at home (normal appetite, drinking, urination and defecation, and is not vomiting or having diarrhea), he may likely be OK and you can monitor him at home. I hope this is helpful - best of luck with Monaco!
