My dog's liver looks like swiss cheese on imaging. What does it mean?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed | 12 years and 2 months old | 45 lbs

I took my dog to the vet again today and had x rays alongside an MRI done for her and they discovered that her liver (lobes?) looks abnormal. It appears to look like cheese and my doctor isn’t sure what it is exactly. I spent well over $2000 just to be shown this. Any guesses? Thanks

I see a still ultrasound picture in your photo, and while there are some hypoechoic areas that could make the liver look like Swiss cheese it is very difficult to interpret a single still ultrasound image. It’s possible that these are cysts, part of a tumor, blood vessels or enlarged bile ducts. Often a liver biopsy is necessary to determine what is ultimately causing liver abnormalities. I would recommend talking to your vet for clarification on what they think this could be and what the next steps might be.
