Is my cat's eye discharge normal, or is it an eye infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Does my cat have an eye infection or is this normal eye junk? Should I pick up a wash from my pet store or clean it at home? Thanks

Discharge and blinking/squinting may be caused by a mild to moderate conjunctivitis, probably secondary to a trauma or infection. A check up would be needed as appropriate treatment would include antibiotics and anti-inflammatory eye drops. Corneal injuries must be ruled out as well. This looks like a relatively small amount of discharge with an otherwise normal eye to me, but if your cat typically does not have any discharge this could be an eye infection. If her eye also seems red or squinty I would definitely recommend having her examined by a vet. You could use a warm washcloth to clear the discharge away but I wouldn’t recommend any drops or washes.
