My cat has a URI. Will medication stop his symptoms from worsening?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered

My cat has an upper respiratory infection. He was feral and a neighbor had him TNRed before we adopted him off the street. I have no clue if he was vaccinated against cat cold viruses. Being feral, he probably wasn't. The vet prescribed amoxicillin and a decongestant. His lungs were clear and clear discharge from nose and eyes. Should the medication given to him prevent his symptoms from getting worse? So far they've been the same for 3 days

It may take 7-10 days for the condition to resolve. As long as he is still eating, breathing normal, and has normal energy then continue the medications as directed and monitor his condition. If he has a viral infection then it will need to just run it's course as the antibiotics will only treat a bacterial infection. If he stops eating, becomes lethargic, or has any breathing issues then he should be rechecked by a vet.
