Why does a feral cat meow frantically then stop when I go outside?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | 5 years and 10 months old | 15 lbs

I have a feral cat colony. Over the last 3 days, while sitting in my house, I hear a faint-but frantic meow from outside. I have gone outside numerous times to try to pinpoint the meow, but I can't seem to find the kitten or cat. I have looked everywhere around my house.. It seems as if every time I go outside, the meowing stops. I'm worried sick about this kitten or cat. Any suggestions??! Thank you, Jewel

I can understand why you are worried! If there are feral cats, it could be from cats mating. Queens will scream when being mated because the Tom's penis has spikes on it. The noise may stop when you go outside because you interrupt them. I would keep trying to pinpoint the source of the nose to make sure everyone is ok.
