My rat's neck abscess burst. What is this black scab after it drained?

My rat buddy had an abscess on his neck, it burst and drained well but today I noticed he has a big black mark/ scab were the abscess was what is this? Please help me!! Pet's info: Small Animal | Rat | Male | unneutered

Thanks for reaching out about Buddy. The dark skin over the abscess if probably necrotic skin, which will likely fall off. But these abscesses rarely heal without antibiotics. Typically is will scab over, trapping bacteria under the skin, which will then multiply again, re-creating the abscess. Then the cycle will continue. A veterinary visit is recommended. Good luck.
